"Consumers Beware of Limo Scams on the Internet"

The Internet is a valuable tool to research products and services before you buy. However it has also become a way for less than honorable companies to mislead consumers and unfortunately the limousine industry is not immune to these tactics. The Tampa Bay market is no exception. BUYERS BE AWARE . Here are some tips:

1) Know who you are dealing with. Make sure the website lists the owners names, phone numbers and business addresses. Many websites are put up by people who do not even own a single limousine.

2) Be sure the business is real. A) Go to www.sunbiz.org and do a name search to make sure the business is registered with the state of Florida. B) Go to www.hcptc.org , this website lists all the companies licensed to operate in the Tampa area. If you can’t find them here – stay away.

3) Watch out for “stock photos” of vehicles. A common tactic of some limousine companies is to load the website with all kinds of vehicles they may not even own. Make sure the photos of vehicles are real by looking for area landmarks and real people in the photos.

4) When you contact the company ask questions. Tell them which vehicle you are interested in and ask them; a) the year, make, model and mileage of the vehicle. b) if they own each vehicle shown on the website. c) Can you come to their business and take a test ride. d) if the vehicle you see in the photo is the actual one that will pull up at your location.

5) Ask for terms and conditions and the total cost. Beware of low hourly rates and hidden charges on the final bill. Make sure you ask if there are any fuel fees, surcharges and be sure the gratuity is included in their hourly rate. Also ask them to email you a written proposal and any written agreements you will be asked to sign as part of the service.
